The Coastal Kids Competition
For this year’s Coastal Kids Competition, Year 5 and 6 students from Sorrento Primary School were asked to use original, locally shot photographs to show what climate change means in practice and how it affects children from coastal communities.
Over 70 highly creative and original entries were received making it an extremely difficult challenge for the judges to choose just a few winners amongst so many great entries.

Honourable mention awards were also provided to: Tia Grogan, Finn Harris, Zoe Ibbotson, Boronica Maree King, Tom Maltby, Matilda-Pearl Muir, Hamish Read, Celeste Robertson, Maddy Scharpenack and Isaac Walls.
Coastal Kids around the world
In 2011, DS commenced the Coastal Kids Project which currently involves 10-12 year- old primary school students from Australia, Bangladesh and Thailand. These students receive instruction and hear guest lectures on climate change and its impacts on coastal communities. One of the highlights of the project is the regular face-to-face Skype conversations between students from the participating countries, where they learn first-hand how climate change is already affecting coastal dwelling children around the world.
DS and Bangladeshi partner organisation Young Power in Social Action (YPSA) are looking forward to receiving entries for the forthcoming Bangladesh Coastal Kids Art Competition, to be held at the William Carey Academy in Chittagong, a coastal region of Bangladesh heavily affected by climate change.
